Cleaning Tips For When You Move

One thing that often gets overlooked in the process of moving, especially in terms of time management, is the final clean up before you leave your current home. To help guide you through this, we’ve put together a cleaning checklist to help you budget your time and make sure you leave your current residence in the best condition possible. Whether you rent or own, you want to leave your home as clean as possible so that you can recoup your full security deposit or have it ready to show to prospective buyers.

An Empty House Is Easier to Clean

It goes without saying that it’s easier to do a deep clean after you have everything packed up and ready to move. Your home doesn’t need to be completely empty before you clean, but it’s a good approach if you have the time to devote to it after everything has been packed and loaded in the moving truck. With less clutter and furniture, it’s much easier to be aware of what needs cleaning or repair.

Walls & Ceilings

Do a survey of your walls and ceilings to make sure that all nails and hangings have been removed. Once you’ve taken care of that, do another check to see if there are any holes that need filling. Similarly, you’ll want to get a good look at the walls in the day time to see if there are any scratches that may require a spot painting. Be sure to check your ceilings for cobwebs and dust and don’t forget to clean any ceiling fans and skylights as they can accumulate dirt over time.

Clean Your Floors

All tile and wood floors should be swept and mopped, ideally after any heavy foot traffic from moving boxes and furniture. Carpets should be vacuumed and carpet cleaned to leave them in the best condition possible. If your carpets are free of stains, you can probably get by with just running the vacuum over them, but you’ll want to use a carpet cleaner if there is any staining or discoloration, especially if you’ve had pets during your time there.

Bathroom Cleaning

The bathroom is usually the room that requires the most attention when it comes to cleaning. You’ll want to sweep and mop the floors, clean all mirrors, and make sure you have the appropriate cleaning supplies for the tub, sink, and toilet. Soap scum and mildew can build up over time and you may have to use a little elbow grease to make sure you eliminate any traces. The same could apply to the bathroom walls if they’ve accumulated dirt or grime, which you’ll want to scrub away. If you have any tile in the bathroom, be sure to give special attention to the grout as it can often be a place that holds in dirt over time.

Yard & Garage

Don’t neglect the outside of the house. Clean up any loose branches in the yard, rake up leaves, and mow the lawn so that it looks presentable, either for future tenants or prospective buyers. The garage also needs attention during the cleaning process, though usually no more than a thorough sweeping after everything has been removed. Be sure to also check for nails or other types of wall hanging apparatus if you’ve had anything hanging in the garage.
