International Movers and Storage

There are a lot of moving parts involved when you relocate overseas. You’ll have a lot of questions like: How do I move my belongings? What happens if there are delays? Where can I keep my things until I am ready to pick them up.

Most international moves occur by shipping container. Shipping containers can move over land or sea, but are most often transported via ship.

Some people have antiques or special items that they choose to send by air freight. Air freight is great because it is much faster than sea freight, however it is also much more expensive. Goods transported by air freight are charged by weight and volume, which can add up pretty quickly.

With shipping containers, you will need to choose whether to ship a full container load (FCL) or less than container load (LCL). An LCL can be a cost-saving method, although there are some disadvantages to this approach. With an LCL, you share the container with another customer or customers, which means more handling of your items and a greater chance of damage.

An FCL gives you all 40 feet of space, giving you enough room to ship the contents of an entire 2-bedroom house, and maybe even a vehicle. The cost will depend on your arrival and departure ports, as well as current conditions for shipping. For some basic examples, the cost of shipping a full container to Naples, Italy from New York City could be between $7,000 – $9,300, and shipping from Los Angeles, California to Tokyo, Japan could cost between $7,500 – $10,200.

Temporary Storage Overseas

What if you need to store some things for awhile? This can occur when your new home is not quite ready or you just need some time to organized.

Indoor storage is appropriate for fragile items or those that need to be kept in a climate-controlled environment. Indoor storage is inherently more secure and helps to protect your belongings from damage caused by moisture, insects, and exposure to sunlight.

Outdoor storage is appropriate for larger items that may be relatively impervious to weather such as boats, tractors, or vehicles. Outdoor storage has the benefit of being easily accessed at all hours, so if you need to pick up your vehicle for the day you can do so without a problem.

The options that are available to you will depend on where you are moving. Many shipping ports offer storage on-site for a fee, or you can choose to have your items moved to an off-site facility nearer to your home.
