Overseas Moving Companies United States to India

International Moving

The cost of hiring overseas moving companies from the U.S. to India will depend on where you are traveling from, and where in India you are traveling to.  To move a full shipping container from New York City to Calcutta, for example, would cost between $8,400-$13,700. If you are departing from Los Angeles, the cost could be $9,300-$15,200.

You might be wondering, why the big range of costs? If you don’t work with an overseas moving company, you will have to navigate the fees and extra expenses on your own. The price ranges quoted above are just for the container shipping, and the range is intended to accommodate the vast array of fees and taxes that you may incur along the way.

What do I need to know about importing my household goods to India?

Some of your household goods can be imported to India tax and duty-free, but there are several noteworthy exceptions. Your tax-free items will be items that you have owned for at least a year, as long as they aren’t golf clubs, electronics, or grand or upright pianos. Pianos and golf clubs are assessed a 35% customs duty based on their reported value. Electronics have their own special rules.

When shipping your electronics to India from the U.S., the first thing you should consider is if it’s worth it to do so. Electronics in the U.S. have specific plugs that plug into the 110v outlets that are standard in North America. In India, outlets run on 220/240v and the plug itself is configured differently. The TL;DR is that you won’t be able to plug most of your appliances in in India, and if you could, the electrical surge would make you regret it.

However, if you still want to bring them, understand that you must pack and inventory them separately, and you will be taxed heavily on these items. The first electronic item of each type that you bring will be taxed at 25%, and for every additional item of that type, the tax is 35%.

Your entire shipment will be inspected during the Customs declaration process and you will be expected to be present for this process. Customs officials will require certain paperwork from you, including:

  • Valid passport
  • Declaration forms
  • Comprehensive box-by-box inventory
  • Separate inventory for electronics
  • Bill of lading from your shipper
  • Indian visa for at least one year

What do I need to know about importing my vehicle to India?

You are welcome to import your vehicle to India as long as the vehicle is less than 3 years old, has been owned by you for at least a year, and the vehicle is 100% Euro III complaint.

For the most part, this means that your North American vehicle will not eligible under these rules. In order for your vehicle to meet European Technical Standards, it will require extensive mechanical modifications. You would need changes to your acceleration, braking, steering, speedometer, and headlights.

If you still aren’t convinced that you should maybe leave your vehicle in the U.S., consider that you will owe a 130% customs duty when you import it. That means you will need to pay customs officials the entire value of your vehicle plus an additional 30% on top of that.
