List of Moving Supplies

Three Men And A Truck

A Comprehensive List of Moving Supplies | Three Men & A Truck

Moving supplies are an important part of any move and it’s helpful if you have a good idea of what you need before you start gathering everything you’ll need. On this list, you’ll find just about every type of moving supply that is commonly used, both by people that move by themselves, as well as by moving companies. As moving day approaches, you’ll want to consider whether or not you’ll need each of these options and then prepare accordingly so that you’re well situated to handle every aspect of packing, moving, and settling into your new home.

Before Moving

Boxes

Moving boxes are a key component of any successful move and you’ll want to gather a variety of box sizes to accommodate your moving needs. Bigger isn’t always better necessarily, especially if you’re packing heavy items like books, or more delicate things like plates. Plan accordingly and your move will go much smoother.

Packing Tape

You’ll need to make sure those boxes are sealed up tight so that nothing spills out during loading, driving, and unloading. For heavier boxes, it’s a good idea to double tape all flaps on boxes to ensure they stay closed and secure throughout the moving process. Be sure to get clear packing tape for this purpose since it adheres better to cardboard boxes than other types of tape.

Markers

Clearly labeled boxes will make the back end of your move much easier once you arrive at your new home. Use a thick marker or sharper to indicate which rooms boxes need to go into, as well as whether the contents of the box are fragile and need to be handled more carefully.

Packing Paper

Packing paper is used for breakable items like glasses and plates to make sure they aren’t damaged during the move, as well as to guard against scratching and damaging other items. Alternately, you can use newspaper, blankets, or clothing for this purpose.

Bubble Wrap

Serving a similar purpose as packing paper, bubble wrap helps guard against anything fragile getting damaged during the move. Bubble wrap provides more cushioning than paper and can be used for larger items like glass table tops and mirrors.

Moving Blankets

If you do have larger items that need an extra layer of insulation from contact with your other belongings, it’s a good idea to use moving blankets. Used in conjunction with bubble wrap, moving blankets can offer a high level of protection during a long distance move.

Plastic Bags

Plastic baggies come in handy when you have small items that you need to keep together. Examples of this would be nails, picture hangers, and screws that belong to a specific piece of furniture that you want to keep together. A piece of masking tape on the outside of the bag can help you remember where these items go after you move.

Moving Day

Tools

You may need some tools if you have any furniture that needs to be taken apart before loading onto the moving truck. Common items that may require this include bed frames, entertainment centers, and any other large items that can be disassembled.

Hand Truck

A hand truck or dolly is essential for moving heavier and awkward items that are too difficult to lift. Appliances like a refrigerator, washer, or dryer all can be moved much easier and safer with a hand truck.

Cargo Straps

You’ll need to secure those heavy items, both on the hand truck when loading and unloading, as well as when they’re on the truck. You don’t want appliances shifting around and bumping into boxes and furniture during the move so it’s essential that they be securely fastened down during the move.

Furniture Pads/Covers

Furniture pads and covers can be very useful to protect couches and other items from being damaged should something fall on them or bump into them on the moving truck. Even a small box can easily tear the fabric on furniture if it falls off of a stack and onto your furniture and covers or pads can help guard against this.

Stretch Wrap

A great way to keep drawers form opening and recliners from popping open is to secure them with stretch wrap before you attempt to move them. This can be found at most hardware stores and is an inexpensive way to make sure things stay in place during the moving process.

Gloves

If you’ve ever caught a hand or finger between a couch and wall while moving, you know painful and dangerous that can be! A couple sturdy pairs of gloves will make sure you have some level of protection against accidents like this, as well as make you more safe should you need to handle glass or anything breakable.

Cleaning Supplies

No move is complete until the final cleaning is done and you’ll want to make sure you have all the necessary cleaning supplies on hand before moving day. At minimum, you’ll want a broom, vacuum, mop, rags, paper towels, and whatever type of cleaners you plan to use. Don’t forget to keep a few trash bags on hand to handle any last minute clean up!
