Moving Overseas to or From Bulgaria
Moving to another country is very exciting. There is so much to learn, from where to go to do your shopping to what the locals do on the weekends. But first, you have to get there with all of your stuff.
Choosing what you will bring with you is an individual choice. Some people choose to bring all the comforts of home with them, while others may decide that moving is a great excuse to buy new furniture in your new country. You should also consider the cost of replacement vs. the cost to ship. If the cost of shipping your belongings exceeds their value…you might consider storing the items for a time back home.
What can you expect in terms of overseas moving costs? Aside from the myriad fees, taxes, and other costs, you will also need to pay for a shipping container to move your household goods or vehicle. To move a full shipping container from New York to Sofia, Bulgaria, you can expect shipping costs of $6,500-$10,700. The journey will take roughly 3-6 weeks. If you’d like to understand all of the costs upfront, we would recommend working with a shipper who can give you a comprehensive shipping quote.
What do I need to know about moving my household goods to Bulgaria?
As with every international move, you will need to carry a lot of paperwork with you when you move to Bulgaria. You will need paperwork for you, and also documentation for your imports.
For you, you will need:
- Passport (copy)
- Proof of employment from Bulgarian employer
- Bulgarian work permit
- Bulgarian ID card (for long-term residence).
Note: If you cannot show your Bulgarian ID card when you arrive, you will be required to leave a deposit with customs officials. If you can provide your Bulgarian ID within six months, your deposit will be returned to you.
For your imports, you will need:
- Customs declaration form

Your personal items can be imported tax and duty-free as long as you import these items within three months of your arrival in Bulgaria.

When moving to Bulgaria, you are allowed to import one vehicle duty-free. All you need to do is present customs officials with proof that you own it, that it is insured, that it is safe, and that you are allowed to drive it. Make sure you have these documents handy:
- Clean title
- Proof of purchase
- Registration from your home country
- Proof of vehicle insurance
- Driver’s license (If you are from North America, you will need an International Driver’s License
