Moving Overseas to or From Romania

International Moving

If you are looking for a website that can give you an all-inclusive shipping quote for international shipping, it just doesn’t exist. There are many factors that go into international relocation costs, from taxes to shipping fees to deposits.

Even the container shipping quotes available online can only give you a broad range of prices. Moving to Romania from New York? You can expect to pay between $6,500-$10,600 for a full shipping container. Moving to Romania from Tokyo? Your container shipping expense will be between ¥953,900 – ¥1,574,600.

If you are working within a tight budget, your best option will be to work with an international shipper like Three Men and a Truck. With their deep expertise in overseas moves, they can see the costs you could not predict, and will include them all in your comprehensive shipping quote.

How do I import my household goods to Romania?

Unlike with some countries, you do not have to be physically present as your items are cleared through customs. This makes working with an overseas shipper even easier, since you don’t have to worry about a thing until your goods arrive at your new home. Your shipper is going to need some documents, however, so work with them to make sure they have what they need to get you through customs fast.

Among the documents you must provide are:

  • A detailed packing list that describes the contents of each box with their serial numbers and estimated values
  • Power of Attorney to authorize customs agents to clear your goods
  • Bill of Lading
  • Proof of residence
  • Romanian visa
  • Valid passport with at least six months left until expiration
  • Proof of employment in Romania

Am I allowed to bring my vehicle to Romania?

Importing a vehicle to Romania is the easy part, at least for immigrants from North America. The challenging part will be getting your vehicle ready to be driven legally in Romania. For North American vehicles, extensive modifications will be required. A qualified mechanic will need to reconfigure your steering, acceleration and braking in order for you to drive on the left side of the road. European Technical Standards will also likely require modifications to your exhaust and exterior lighting.

These modifications are expensive and the results can be unsightly. Make sure you do your research before bringing your vehicle to Romania from Canada, Mexico, or the United States.

If you do bring a vehicle, you will need to provide some important documents to prove that you fully own the vehicle (no liens), have auto insurance and legal registration from your home country, and that you can legally drive in Romania (by way of an International Driver’s License).

As long as you have owned the vehicle for at least six months and can commit to not selling, renting, or leasing the vehicle for at least one year after your arrival, you can import your vehicle to Romania tax and duty-free.
