Moving International to or From Serbia

Moving Overseas to or From Serbia

International Moving

If you are moving to Serbia, you likely have a lot of questions. One of the biggest questions you will need to answer is how much it is going to cost to move your household goods or vehicle. There are a lot of costs involved – some are easy to figure out and some are more difficult to forecast.

One of the easier costs to pin down is the actual shipping cost. The cost to move a full shipping container, which is about 20 feet long, from New York City to Belgrade, Serbia will cost between $6,700 – $11,300. From Tokyo, the cost will be between ¥991,600 – ¥1,637,700.

Along the way, there are always additional fees – fees for storage, transport, handling, inspecting, and so on. To avoid surprises, working with an overseas moving company is a great choice, since they can give you a comprehensive shipping quote that includes all of that information.

What do I need to know about moving my household goods to Serbia?

If you have owned your household items for at least six months, and you have lived in your home country for at least a year, you can bring your permitted household goods to Serbia tax and duty-free. The fine print here is that you have to keep all these items in your possession for at least a year after your arrival in the country.

Speaking of fine print, there are a ton of documents you will need to create and complete for customs clearance.

Among the documents you will need are:

  • A detailed inventory with model/serial numbers, valuations, and box-by-box contents
  • Passport – make sure your passport has at least three months left before it expires
  • Proof of Shipping Costs
  • Power of Attorney for the Serbian customs officials

Can I import my vehicle to Serbia?

The first question is, are you a U.S. citizen? If so, you will not be allowed to import your vehicle to Serbia. This is because vehicles from the U.S. are manufactured to be driven on the right-hand side of the road, instead of the left like in Serbia.

For all other countries, you can import your vehicle tax and duty-free if your vehicle is less than six years old and you have owned it at least six months. If you don’t qualify for this benefit, your vehicle will be subject to a 3% import tax. Duties are calculated based on 20% of the value of your vehicle plus the cost of transporting your vehicle.
