Moving Overseas from Australia

If you are moving overseas from Australia, you will have two main shipping options: Air freight or sea freight. Let’s talk about these two options.

Air Freight

Air freight is the quickest and most expensive option. Air freight is generally only used for lightweight items, in part due to the fact that the expense of air freight overseas moves are calculated by the higher number between actual weight and chargeable weight. Chargeable weight is a measure of volume that requires a mathematical formula.

Here are some of the rules you must follow for air freight.

  • Your individual boxes cannot weigh more than 100 lbs. each.
  • The exterior dimensions of your boxes cannot exceed 90 inches.
  • No liquids, perishables, or hazardous materials are permitted.

Your carefully packed items will usually be packed onto a pallet for transfer. While the pallet does provide some protection, you will still want to pack your items into their boxes with care, especially if you’ve ever watched airline baggage handlers do their work.

Sea Freight

The most common option for overseas moves is sea freight by shipping container. You will be able to choose between a full container load (FCL) or a less than container load (LCL). With an FCL, you should be able to pack a vehicle and the contents of a two-bedroom home.

If you don’t feel like you are bringing enough stuff to warrant a FCL, you can choose a LCL. This option will save you a few hundred dollars, but beware. When you choose to ship your items via LCL, you end up sharing your container with other people. The additional handling this requires could delay your shipment by weeks.

The cost of shipping a full container will depend on your arrival and departure ports. To ship a FCL from Brisbane to New York City will cost $11,700-$15,700. From Brisbane to Los Angeles, the cost is a little cheaper, at $10,500-$14,100.

Shipping out of Australia

Australia is an island, which means there is no shortage of shipping ports to choose from. In fact, if you look it up, you will find that this island nation has over 100 ports. You should choose the port that is most convenient to your departure and arrival destinations. This is a list of major Australian shipping ports you could choose from, and there are many others besides these you could research as well.

  • Port of Brisbane is the largest seaport in Australia’s Queensland.
  • Port of Melbourne is among Australia’s most important shipping hubs.
  • Port of Hedland is Australia’s busiest container port, located in Western Australia.
  • Port of Adelaide is the largest and busiest port in Southern Australia.
  • Port of Newcastle is the main port of Eastern Australia.
