What is the history of Morris County, NJ?

Morris County was founded on March 15, 1739 and it received its name from Colonel Lewis Morris, New Jersey’s former British governor. However, prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was occupied by the Lenape Native Americans. In the early 1600s, the Dutch began surveying the area eventually establishing the New Netherland colony from 1611 to 1614. This zone included much of Northern New Jersey. They established forts and traded with the Native Americans until a series of wars broke out around 1643.

Years of hostility between the Dutch and Native Americans prevented anyone from truly colonizing the Morris County region. Ultimately, the area was surrendered to the British and they began establishing European settlements in the 18th century. Morris County was once originally part of both Burlington County and Hunterdon County before officially being created in 1739.
