Planning A Road Trip While Moving Cross Country

There’s no arguing that moving is a stressful undertaking, no matter how far you’re moving. If you happen to be moving across the country and planning to drive your car while the movers are delivering your belongings, it’s a great opportunity to take some of the stress out of the experience by taking a road trip to your new home. This will no doubt add to the expense of moving, but it’s a great way to take a built in vacation and see some of the country while you embark on the next chapter in your life.

Map Your Route

If a road trip is part of your moving plans, be sure you carefully map out the route you’ll be taking. Remember that the direct route doesn’t have to be the one you take since you’ll be stopping along the way to see some sights. You may want to leave yourself an extra day or two in areas that you’d like to explore so that you have time to see and do everything that you want to. If there’s a particular city or state that you want to spend some extra time in, consider a short term rental rather than a hotel. If you’re able to rent a house for a couple days, you can make food there rather than spend money on eating out, which is often the only option at a hotel.

Plan Activities

As you’re planning which route you’re taking to your new home, keep in mind which sights you want to see along the way. If you’re moving from one coast to other, you may want to stop at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History or the Grand Canyon. Or perhaps you just want a few days to visit Denver or St. Louis—whatever you want to check off your bucket list of places to see and things to do can become a reality with proper planning.

Have Your Car Serviced

Just like any other road trip, you’ll want to have your car serviced before embarking on a multiple day drive that covers thousands of miles. The last thing you want to deal with when driving across the country is getting stuck in the middle of nowhere and having your car towed to a shop for repairs. Not only will this delay your trip, but there’s obviously a financial component that can put a crimp in your plans. A simple tune up is usually enough to ensure you’ll make it to your destination without incident, but be sure to pay special attention to things like belts, tires, and fluid levels.

Pack Accordingly

Since you’ll be on the road for several days, if not a week or more, you’ll need to slightly alter how you pack. Under normal circumstances, you may just pack a few days worth of clothes and fill the car with items that you’re moving. When you’re taking a road trip, you’ll need more clothes, whatever items you use on a regular or daily basis, and some drinks and snacks for the drive. If you want to get really ambitious, you can work in a night or two of camping too. Naturally, these items will take up more space in the vehicle so you may not be able to bring as many boxes of household items as you might otherwise.
