Things Movers Wish You Knew | Three Men & A Truck

There are some simple steps you should take to make sure your belongings are ready to be loaded and moved before the movers arrive at your home. Some things you need to do in order to prepare for movers are fairly obvious: have everything packed and ready to load, water or other refreshments are always appreciated, access to a bathroom is a necessity, and staying out of the way while they work are all things that most customers understand. But there are some tips that may be less clear, which we’ll cover in this article about things that movers wish you knew.

Be Available For Questions

While we appreciate having a clear space to work without interference, it is helpful if you’re available should we have any questions. If you have any items you don’t want loaded onto the moving truck, or certain items you want packed or loaded in a specific way, those are things we definitely want to know. Likewise, if you have any furniture or larger items that may be tricky to move and you have some advice on how to handle—or if there’s anything quirky about a particular piece of furniture—that’s all good information for us to work with.

Children & Pets Shouldn’t Be An Obstacle

If you have young children or pets that going to be around on moving day, it’s very helpful for us if they are kept out of the way while we’re doing the heavy lifting. We understand that it’s sometimes unavoidable to have family and pets around on moving day, but it’s much easier for us to do our job if they are kept out of the paths we’ll be using to move furniture and boxes. Children and pets  can both be curious about what we’re doing and it makes the job that much more difficult (and potentially dangerous) if they’re in the immediate area while we work.

Be Clear About What Doesn’t Go In The Truck

If you have any items you plan on moving yourself or that you don’t want packed like bathroom items or things for daily use, it’s important that we know that. Once a team of movers arrive, they are pretty focused on loading up the truck as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you have a box of things you plan to keep with you when you move, try to communicate that, or even better, keep it out of sight so that it doesn’t accidentally make its way onto the truck. It can even be a good idea to separate the things you want to move personally into a separate locked room so that there’s no chance of miscommunication.

Empty Those Drawers!

It’s tempting not to empty the drawers in a dresser, hutch, or entertainment center because it seems like it creates less work when you’re putting everything away, but it actually creates problems for movers. Removing the drawers and emptying them not only makes furniture easier to move, but it also eliminates the risk of items shifting around during transport. If you can take the time to empty and remove drawers, as well as pack up the contents of the drawers, your movers will greatly appreciate the effort.

Labeling Boxes Helps Us Too

Labeling your boxes with either the contents or which room they belong in doesn’t just make unpacking easier for you, it also helps us know which rooms they go in. If we know what goes in which room, things move much more smoothly and even better if you’re able to tell us which bedroom belongs to which member of the family. Not only will your movers be happy you took the time to label things and make their job easier, but you’ll have an easier time when you need to unpack and organize your home.
