Tips For Having A Yard Sale Before You Move

A yard sale is a great way to get rid of some items that we may not need, which makes it ideal if you’re planning to move in the near future. Moving means you’ll likely have to go through years of old things you’ve accumulated and be faced with the decision of keeping them or moving on. Hosting a garage or yard sale is the perfect way to easily get rid of items you won’t need in your new home, while hopefully getting some cash to help you offset moving expenses. Here are some great tips to follow for your pre-moving yard sale.

Two Days Are Better Than One

If you have the time, try to plan for a two day garage sale instead of just one. Saturday and Sunday are great days since you’ll likely get more traffic on those days and you have the potential of return buyers if they see an item they like. Having a two day sale can also be a benefit if you get bad weather for one of the days. Remember that day two is a good time to start slashing prices if you really want to get rid of some final items before moving.

Advertise

You don’t need to go overboard with advertising, but try to make sure to cover your bases so that everyone who might be interested knows that you’re having a sale. Facebook can be a great way to get this done if there are any local or community groups you’re a part of. Signage can also help on the days of your yard sale so that anyone driving through the area will be aware that you’re having a sale and be able to find it. If you want to go a step further, you can advertise in the local newspaper and put up fliers in areas like gas stations and banks that allow it.

Prices Should Be Flexible

Don’t be too rigid with your prices—remember these are items that you’re willing to part with and one less thing you’ll need to pack when moving. Haggling is part of the process of having a yard sale and you should be open to discounting off of marked prices, especially if someone is buying multiple items. Any fair offer should be considered, especially if you’ll just be donating or discarding some of the items if you’re unable to sell them.

Display Counts

Presentation counts for yard sales too! Make use of tables to display the items you’re selling so that they’re easily viewable for your guests. It’s also a good idea to create natural walking paths, like aisles in a store, so that prospective buyers have ample space to browse around and not bump into each other. If you really want to make things appealing, set out some snacks and drinks to attract customers and keep them there long enough to buy something.

Have Change On Hand

Remember that yard sales are a cash endeavor so you should have change on hand and plenty of it. You don’t want a lack of change to prevent you from selling something that you’re trying to get rid of, after all. You can go to your bank and get change (lots of ones and coins!) before your garage sale day. Remember that banks aren’t often open on the weekend so you’ll have to plan ahead to make sure you have enough change for a weekend sale.
