Moving Tips: When Is the Best Time To Move?

The best time to move applies to the time of year, day of the week, and even the time of day. Try not to let your decision of when to move wait until the last minute or you may not have much say in the process. Believe it or not, your move can be made much easier, and in some cases cheaper, depending on when you decide to move. Ultimately, when you are able to move comes down to what fits with your own schedule, but if you know you’re going to move in the future, it can be helpful to pin down a specific time and date ahead of time so you’ll have one less thing to worry about and the whole process will be made easier.

One of the main concerns for those moving with children is the timing of the school year. Ideally, you don’t want them to change schools in the middle of the year so it makes sense to try and time your move around the summer months. If you’re undertaking a do-it-yourself move, it can also be beneficial to move during the summer due to more daylight and less chance of bad weather, which makes driving a rental truck much easier. The drawback of a summer move is that it’s when prices tend to be highest for moving companies since it’s the time of year when they have the most business.

If the school year is not a concern of yours when moving, you may want to consider moving during the fall or winter. The fall is typically a better time to move since the weather isn’t quite as extreme, but you still get the benefit of lower prices than you might pay during summer months. If you’re moving to a colder climate like the northeast, you may want to try and avoid winter months as it can be very difficult should encounter snow or sleet while driving, which also applies to professional moving companies. If you’re moving to a warmer climate like the southwest, a winter move may be workable and you can take advantage of the cheapest time of year to move. Spring is a good time of year to move if you want to avoid colder weather, but don’t have to wait until the summer to relocate. Prices are still slightly lower and the drive is much easier than it would be during fall or winter.

As far as the time of month and week that you move, most savings are found in the middle. As you might expect, most people move at the beginning or end of the month and tend to stick to weekends when they don’t have work obligations. If you can time your move toward the middle of the month and do it during mid-week, you’ll likely maximize your savings. Time of day should be considered as well and most movers will want to get started early, as do most people who are moving. The earlier you start, the sooner you’ll be able to get on the road for long distance moves and the earlier you’ll be able to start unpacking if you’re moving locally.
